Dear Brandon Families,
As most of you are aware, there was another school shooting that took place this week in Florida. From every vantage point, it is difficult to understand these events as our hearts break for the victims and their families. Here in Brandon, we are blessed with safe schools and a family environment for the children of the community. With that said, I want you to know that we are constantly working to be proactive when it comes to safety. Our procedures are up-to-date, we are constantly training and we are always looking for any breakdowns in our execution of our security protocols. Much of this work is done with the leadership of our district’s police liaison officer and the Oakland County Sheriff’s department.
After this most recent tragedy, the Sheriff’s department and administration are again looking for ways to make our schools even safer. One area of particular attention in this review is how we identify students with certain at-risk predispositions. We have certain procedures in place in the schools, but we can always use your help.  If you have a concern, please be sure to report it.  This can be done to the school, to the police or to the OK2Say website (http://www.michigan.gov/ok2say/) that was created by the State. Additionally, if you have suggestions for ways to improve safety (example: “I noticed that a certain door is always propped open….”), please let your school's administrator know or feel free to contact me at moutlaw@brandon.k12.mi.us.
In closing, I want to thank you all for being part of the Brandon family and for helping to preserve the safe, family environment that our children deserve.

Sincerely,

Matthew S. Outlaw
Superintendent for the Brandon School District
