2021 Bond Proposal

May 6, 2021

Dear Community Members, Parents, and Employees,

The Brandon School District is considering placing a “no mill increase over the current debt levy” bond proposal on the November 2, 2021 ballot.

Historically the district has been through several refunding opportunities by refinancing existing debt due to low-interest rates.  Our next refunding is scheduled for this month. The new refunding is projected to save the taxpayers around 4.4 million dollars. This increases the bonding capacity that allows us to structure a new bond with a “projected no mill increase.”

The new bond proposal, under consideration, would have a defined scope. This would improve the district’s facilities regarding the educational environment, security, technology, building enhancements, playgrounds, buses, and athletic facility upgrades. However, we understand that we need to prioritize by placing the most critical needs first.  Further, we acknowledge that our technology needs are greater than what was allocated in the original proposal.

Another key difference is to consider a two-series bond proposal for the November 2021 ballot. In a two-series bond, proceeds would be spent over a longer period of time. The district could then concentrate on high priority needs first. A two-series bond proposal gives the district flexibility to adjust and improve areas over an eight year time period. In a one-series bond, proceeds must be spent and projects completed over a three to four-year period.

During this month, we will be assessing our current facility and technology needs.  We strongly value your input as it is essential to receive feedback throughout this process.  We would like to hear from as many parents, employees, and community members as possible.

We will be holding informational meetings for parents and the community on Wednesday, May 19th, and Tuesday, May 25th. We will have virtual sessions scheduled at 9:00 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. and an in-person session scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on both days for you to learn more about upcoming bond program considerations. Our 6:30 p.m. in-person meetings will be held at the I-Tech center. Social distancing and masks are required for attendees.
