March 17th Update from Dr. Heidrich

March 17, 2021

Dear Brandon families,

We would like to take this opportunity to update you on our initial planning for the 2021-2022 school year. Monday evening, we discussed school times and school schedules for the next school year at the board of education meeting. Our plans include returning to similar times and schedules set at the beginning of the 2019-2020 school year. Further, at the meeting, we discussed planning for middle school and high school to switch back to a six-hour traditional day vs. the alternating 3 x 3 block schedule. Additionally, we decided to continue to offer our Brandon Learn From Home and Summit Virtual program options to all families for the 2021-2022 school year at every grade level.

Although we intend to move to more traditional schedules and times, we still have many unknowns to work through. As we prepare for next year, decisions may linger into the summer as we continue to receive updates and direction from the Oakland County Health Department, Michigan Department of Education, and any orders from the Governor’s office. As new guidance evolves, our administrative team and staff will continue to adapt and develop plans for any changes to our mitigation strategies in preparation for the 2021-2022 school year.

Below are the proposed times for the 2021-2022 school year.

Preschool Full Day 8:30 am - 3:25 pm

AM only 8:30 am -11:30 am

PM only 12:25 pm - 3:25 pm

Harvey Swanson 8:35 am - 3:30 pm

Oakwood 8:45 am - 3:40 pm

Brandon Middle School 7:35 am - 2:30 pm

Brandon High School 7:25 am - 2:20 pm

We also would like to invite any parent who has questions regarding next year’s schedule to join us for a virtual question and answer session regarding our schedule changes and plans for next year. We will briefly present our plans for next year, and you will have an opportunity to ask questions. Our two virtual sessions will be on Wednesday, March 24th, and after spring break on Wednesday, April 7th, both sessions will be from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Here are the links for both sessions to attend virtually. We will also post these links on the district website.

Sincerely,

Karl Heidrich

Did You Know?

Music is an integral part of student life at Brandon. With a variety of bands and choirs from the elementary schools to the high school, we have something for any musical interest.

Virtual learning has taken hold at Brandon. With a menu of options to meet special academic requests and scheduling conflicts, our virtual school has seen tremendous growth.

Academics are a priority at all grade levels. With advanced and honors opportunities at the lower grades to a large AP offering, we can challenge even the most motivated students.

Graduation is just the beginning. Recent graduates have matriculated at MIT, University of Chicago, University of Michigan, Michigan State, and many other excellent schools.

Athletics bring our community together. Competing in the Flint Metro League, our Blackhawks regularly compete for league titles and berths in the state tournament.

Technology is part of our fabric. Each school in our district is equipped with state of the art technology, highlighted by a 1:1 device to student ratio at Harvey-Swanson Elementary.
